KARACHI:

The Sindh High Court (SHC) has directed the election commission on Friday to file comments on the printing of new voter lists for the 13 redrawn constituencies of Karachi.

On Thursday, the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) had approached the court assailing the Election Commission of Pakistan’s decision to print new voter lists for these constituencies. MQM lawyer Barrister Farogh Naseem claimed that his party had already challenged the delimitation of the constituencies and the SHC had reserved its verdict, so the printing of new electoral rolls at this stage would be void.

He had sought a stay order, restraining the commission from printing such lists, till the decision on its petition was announced. On Friday, an officer of the election commission appeared and requested for time to file comments of his department. Deputy attorney general Munirur Rehman also sought time to file comments of the federal government.

At request of both officers, the bench headed by Justice Maqbool Baqar, adjourned the hearing till April 14.
