SUKKUR:

Artists dwell among the people and are public representatives in the truest sense of the term. Believing in this thought, renowned Sindhi Singer Shaman Ali Mirali has decided to contest elections from two seats in Sukkur.

Shaman has been entertaining the people of Sindh with his voice for almost a quarter of a century. He is a native of Shikarpur, but submitted his nomination papers for NA-199 Sukkur and PS-4 Sukkur (Salehpat). Explaining his choice of constituency he said that he has a huge fan following in the region.

Expounding more on the decision to contest elections, Shaman said that during his performances he interacted with people from various segments of society and is well aware of their problems.

“True representatives of the people are those that live among them through thick and thin. Politicians on the other hand come to grab votes and then vanish into thin air.”

Shaman Mirali is contesting election against PPPP’s Syed Khursheed Ahmed Shah from NA-199 Sukkur and against his nephew and son-in-law Awais Qadir Shah from PS-4.

Referring to the floods of 2010 that affected upper Sindh and some parts of the lower Sindh, Shaman said he witnessed police baton charging people desperately looking for food for their families.

“I saw people lose their self-respect, besides losing their belongings and shelter.”

The Sindhi singer accused the government of failing to provide relief to the people in time of need.

“Five years are more than enough to serve the people, but the government did nothing for the poor.”

What’s on offer?

Shaman is a novice in the world of politics and expects that his fans will support him with their votes. In return he claims he will work to improve education, health and infrastructure networks in his constituency, if he emerges victorious in the polls.

“I have everything one can desire in life and now it’s my time to pay back.”

Referring to the poor health facilities in the area, he said that people die on their way to hospitals. He promised to take measures to ensure quick dispatch of people to Rohri or Sukkur hospitals.

“I will purchase a few ambulances, which will be readily available for the people.”

He also committed to reclaiming closed schools from under the occupation of influential persons.

He said Syed Ghous Ali Shah of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) had contacted him and offered his party’s support, but that he would like to contest elections independently.

“People have suffered enough after electing same people again and again. If we want to change our fate, we have to vote for sincere and dedicated people.”
