Offensive terminology: Magistrates 3rd class no more

Chief JusticeUmar Ata Bandial on Wednesday approved the change in the designation for Magistrate 3rd Class to Magistrate Class III. The term Magistrate 3rd Class had been used as part of court jargon for the past 50 years, indicating the level of seniority of a judge. However, the LHC issued a statement on Wednesday announcing the change as the term Magistrate 3rd Class was considered to be derogatory by many. Punjab Judicial Academy Chairman Justice (retd) Syed Jamshed Ali Shah had moved the Lahore High Court to issue a notification announcing the change.
