Election Accusations: Presidency says it is not using NAB to malign Shahbaz
Shahbaz Sharif maintains that the Presidency is behind moves to declare him a loan defaulter.
ISLAMABAD:
The office of President Asif Ali Zardari denied allegations made by the former chief minister of Punjab Mian Shahbaz Sharif on Saturday. Shahbaz has accused the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) of maligning him at the behest of the Presidency.
Shahbaz Sharif maintains that the Presidency is behind moves to declare him a loan defaulter, which would make him ineligible to contest elections. Presidential spokesman Farhatullah Babar dismissed the allegations, adding that NAB is an independent institution under the law and is not under any obligation to take directions from the Presidency.
“The Presidency has nothing to do with any information that NAB may or may not give to the ECP under the law. Dragging the Presidency into allegations related to partisan issues is uncalled for,” he said in a statement.
