Agricultural credit: NBP reaches out to farmers

The bank has disbursed Rs45.789 billion as agriculture credit among 241,296 farmers during 2012

 “The National Bank of Pakistan (NBP) has disbursed Rs45.789 billion as agriculture credit among 241,296 farmers during 2012, against a target of Rs43.2 billion”, a statement of the bank issued here said. 

NBP said that the loans disbursed are categorised into production loans and development loans. Under the first category loans are disbursed mainly for the procurement of seeds, pesticides, fertilizers and for levelling land.


Whereas the second category covers purchase of tractors, agricultural implements, construction of modern storage facilities, cattle and poultry farms, and providing running finance for catering to day to day requirements of a farmer.   


Agriculture is the backbone of Pakistan economy and contributes around 21% to Pakistan’s GDP and directly supports three-quarters of the country’s population, employs half of the labour force and also contributes a large share in country’s total exports.
