RAWALPINDI:

The police on Saturday foiled an alleged terror plot when four rockets and four detonators were recovered from near Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi. Saddar Circle Superintendent Waheedur Rehman Khattak said the police had conducted a raid in Shumal Housing Society, a private residential area located within a kilometre of the jail.

Khattak said the police had acted on the report of a watchman who noticed two “suspicious” men in the housing society. When the police arrived at the scene, the suspects had fled, leaving behind a bag from which the rockets and detonators were later recovered. The police conducted a search operation of the surrounding area with the help of sniffer dogs.

Khattak said the alleged terrorists might have been planning to attack Adiala Jail, based on the location the explosives were found.

The Shia community in Rawalpindi might also be a potential target, he said.

City Police Officer Azhar Hameed Khokhar announced a Rs50,000 award for the watchman who tipped off the police.

A case has been registered against unknown suspects and further investigations are underway.
