ISLAMABAD:

Pakistani media should extensively cover issues related to health and population and “go beyond the basics facts”.

This was the crux of the workshop on “Leadership in Strategic Health Communications”, which concluded on Saturday. The five-day event was organised by Centre for Communication Programme in collaboration with the Johns Hopkins University.

“A health reporter should cover health or population issues beyond the basic visible fact, and dig out the real story rather than just sharing general information,” Atif Ikram Butt, founding member of the Centre for Communication Programme, said this while talking to The Express Tribune.

A total of 22 journalists from broadcast and print media from across the country participated in the workshop.

Dr Benjamin V. Lozare, chief of training division and Safi Basil, chief of Asia division from JHUCCP Baltimore, USA conducted the five-day sessions.

Topics such as “What is leadership and strategic health communication, what is happing now in the health and population sectors and why is there a difference, what do we need to do to improve the health of Pakistani families and address population issues facing the country, what interventions do we need to develop to change the situation,” were discussed at the workshop.

The participants also came up with short term and long term measures which could be taken to bring improvement in the overall health and population fields in the country.

Reasons for according less coverage to health-related issues was also discussed at the workshop.

Anchor Dr Moeed Pirzada distributed certificates among the participants.
