Best seller: Indus Motor to unveil new Corolla by end-2014

High cost of production meant they could not manufacture any of the economy models.

Indus Motors had been working on at least three feasibilities of economy cars.

KARACHI:

During the meeting with the journalists, Indus Motor CEO announced that his company was working on the launch of new generation of Toyota Corollas by the end-2014.

Corolla is the flagship car of Indus Motors which has a dominant market share of over 70% in the 1,300cc-engine category in Pakistan.

Apart from that, Indus Motors had been working on at least three feasibilities of economy cars over the last few years but could not succeed, he said, adding that “it is unfortunate that we worked on three models in the last few years, but owing to high cost of production we did not start assembling any of those economy cars in Pakistan.”

“Automobiles companies all over the world love to launch a new model upon the discontinuation of any older model, but we were unfortunate that we could not replace our Daihatsu Cuore despite all our efforts,” he said.

When Indus Motors discontinued its Cuore a year ago, it used to sell 12,000 units of Cuore annually. That discontinuation paved a clear road for Pak Suzuki for its Suzuki Mehran – its only rival in the 800cc-engine category in the country.
