MIRANSHAH:
The curfew in North Waziristan was relaxed for 10 hours in some parts of the agency on Thursday, while security check posts were declared no-go areas.

A security official said announcements made from local mosques stated the curfew would be lifted from 7am till 5pm. Though the curfew was lifted in Mir Ali, Miranshah, Ramzak, Ghulam Khan Bazaar and some residential areas, it remained in place in Ghulam Khan, Khajori, Esha, Boya and all security check post areas, he added.

The official clarified he does not know when the curfew will be lifted permanently.

The respite gave candidates contesting in the upcoming elections the opportunity to visit political administration officials and submit their applications.

The curfew was imposed following a suicide attack on Esha check post on March 23. The attack left 17 security personnel dead and 40 others wounded.

Residents were told to keep to their houses with shoot-at-sight orders given to security forces, disrupting business, health and educational activities.

On Monday, more than a hundred students in Bannu and Miranshah missed their matriculation exams of Chemistry because they could not reach examination centres.

On Tuesday, two children died of measles due to the unavailability of medicines in the troubled region of Dossali and Lora Mandi where several other patients were stranded in their houses without medical attention.
