Election petition: Petitioner fined Rs0.5m for wasting court’s time
Had sought disqualification of Khawaja Islam over ‘fake degree’.

The Lahore High Court on Thursday fined a petitioner Rs500,000 for wasting the court’s time after he withdrew his petition seeking the disqualification from elections of former MPA Khawaja Muhammad Islam.
Petitioner Ashiq Hussain and his lawyer appeared before the court on Thursday and submitted that they wished to withdraw the petition, which alleged that the former MPA’s degree was fake.
Justice Muhammad Khalid Mehmood Khan expressed displeasure over the situation and observed that the petitioner had wasted the court’s time and now wanted to withdraw, apparently after a compromise. He imposed a Rs500,000 fine on the petitioner and disposed of the petition as withdrawn.
The petitioner had submitted that Islam, who had been elected from PP-72 in 2008, had submitted a fake BA degree to the Election Commission when filing his nomination papers. This deception meant that he did not meet the requirements for parliamentarians set under Articles 62 and 63 of the Constitution and he should therefore be disqualified, he said.
Meanwhile, the court adjourned till April 3 the hearing of a civil miscellaneous application seeking directions to stop Islam from contesting the elections. Petitioner Khawaja Ijaz filed the application on a pending petition also seeking Islam’s disqualification for having a fake degree.
