I’m a young, educated Pakistani preparing to vote for the first time in my life. Who should I vote for?
I genuinely want to do my part to make this country a better place, which is why I want to make an educated, well thought out decision about who I should vote for. The problem is that I’m really confused about my choices and not clear about how I should go around making the right decision on election day.
I inevitably begin evaluating my options with the one person everybody in my social circle is talking about: Imran Khan. I don’t trust politics in Pakistan but I must admit that there was something about Imran Khan’s tsunami that sparked my initial interest in these elections. It’s difficult to describe the feeling but for a fleeting moment, Imran made me believe in Pakistan again.
Unfortunately, as time passed, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s ‘new ball’ shine dimmed as it began to receive criticism from many quarters simultaneously. Deep down inside, I still want to vote for Imran because we’ve already tried every other leader. However, I want to at least evaluate the rest of my options, just to be sure.
The problem is that most political parties aren’t actively courting my vote. To put it politely, they think my vote can’t help them win the upcoming elections. Unfortunately, I’m part of a voting bloc that wants to be courted, but can’t always find the right prospective suitor. My situation is analogous to the father of a young Pakistani woman growing past her ‘sell by date’ for rishtas. I have the uncomfortable feeling of knowing that I have to live life according to the whims of a society I don’t agree with and cannot change overnight.
Studying this landscape, some of my friends keep insisting that my vote won’t make a difference. To be completely honest, I think they might be right but I can still rationalise my decision to vote: even if my vote doesn’t make a difference, I’ll still feel better about myself after voting, compared with my ‘burger’ friends, who think they can change the country by updating their Facebook statuses. If nothing else, at least I can tell my children that I tried.
It appears that for individuals like me, the decision to vote is a lot easier than the decision of knowing who to vote for. To help make a voting decision, let me identify the issues that really matter. My top three national priorities are as follows: security, security and security! That’s what we really need in Pakistan. I love my country and genuinely feel grateful for the opportunities I’ve been blessed with. All I really want now is for Pakistan to become safe and I won’t mind all the other problems in the country.
I understand that security in Pakistan is a complex issue. But it is the defining issue of the upcoming elections. If the security situation in Pakistan continues to slide in the next three to five years, then I’ll have to consider moving out of the country permanently — something I don’t want to do but may have to do to give my children a better future.
After security, my second priority is the economy. A close third is the elimination of power outages. I don’t expect a new Pakistani leader to have a magic wand that can make all our problems go way but I would appreciate if he focused on these three priorities in that order. I wish that Pakistani journalists and the media could tell me which political party is most well-suited to deliver on these three priorities but they’re too busy covering the impact of ignoring these priorities (bombs, targeted killings, inflation, unemployment) instead of sparking conversations on how we can focus on these priorities to turn around our fortunes as a nation.

This tells me three things,
A. Educated or not, You can not think for yourself.
B. You don't want to take responsibility for your actions.
C. You are probably better off not voting at all.
Imran Khan (PTI) and Pervez Musharraf (APML) are the only people that can be trusted. One of them has shown in the past that he can perform, and the other one is committed to doing the same. They are both honest leaders and honesty is what will get the country out of where it is now.
Pakistan will need a strong government this time around, a coalition will take us nowhere as all , energies are spent by the stakeholders to keep the government intact. Only one party this time around has a chance to do this and that is N league. JI, PTI, Qadri are just spoilers to decrease N league's vote. Voting for Imran Khan will only be a waste. Your vote will not make any PTI candidate win, It will make PMLN's candidate lose
MQM in Karachi, PTI outside. People love to hate MQM, without looking at the bigger picture. MQM is a thug if the opposition is thug, MQM will work it butts off they have a good compeitition, I would not mind if PTI takes more set in Sind, but whatever PTI is doing now or saying MQM has been shouting since ages, but they cant do anything due to limited capacity. If JI, ANP or PPPP takes over KHI then you will understand the importance of MQM. Only MQM is accessible in case of issues, they are from the community and not only urdu speaking. PTI does not understand politics of KHI.
@Mohammad: sahib, why not for Khalifa Zahid Hamid Gazwa e Hind Wala?
The question should be....will I be able to cast my vote?
On voting, pick whoever you want - either party wise or candidate wise but do vote. On writing, improve it - and try to make slightly more gender sensitive analogies. Your sell-by date one isn't appreciated.
Vote for the right person in your constituency forget about its affiliation with main party
vote for najam sethi !! vote for change !!
APML or PTI... period. (I mean to say)
APML or Musharraf.. period.
@Ammar:
Yes, they only kill people, then stage a drama about it in the assemblies. People still remember May 12, 2007. Everybody knows who did it. Just because a handful of their own workers died doesn't absolve them of the blame.
PTI is old wine in new bottle. The party majorly consists of turncoats from all over. It has kind of become a majboori for us to vote for PTI because we have no other option. Currently I dont find any suitable candidate to vote except gen. Musharraf but i know he wont be able to win enough seats to make it to Government.
Indeed, PML-N and PPP befooled us twice and thrice. First every Pakistani should come outside to cast his vote. PTI's most leaders are tax payers and their priorities are same, what every Pakistani wants to see in Pakistan. So, no need to be worry, just come out and vote for PTI and throw these old dirty politicians out of power. We need to a change Pakistan that is possible through your vote for PTI.
I will not vote PML-N, PPP, and MQM at any cast as these three are in power since long and our country not did any improvement under there reign.
But I have vote to cast.
@Ammar: PTI may have alliance with Mullah's(those who's party have a clean record just btw), but atleast there leaders have the decency to pay there phone bill. "MQM leaders Babar Ghauri and Farooq Sattar" are amongst the list of politicians who have not bothered to pay their telephone bills. I really don't want such people leading my city and province. Its time for change. Jeay PTI!
One last thing, if I were you, I would also put education on the priority list for the long-term interest of Pakistan, since that is one of the most important investments we can make in our children today. On that end too, I see PTI having done more homework than PMLN. We don't need laptops and Danish schools, we need more kids in school after fixing state's education infrastructure.
I don't think so it is that hard of a decision as people are making it out to be. Since PPP needs a requiem after having lived through leadership of Zardari, I would say there are only two national contenders: PMLN and PTI. To narrow it down further, you have to look at inter-dependencies between security, economy, and energy. If you fix security and energy, economy will automatically improve. Since higher taxation is not the first priority of PMLN, nor are overseas Pakistanis going to trust them with their money, PTI is the only one that will be able to generate enough capital from domestic and outside sources to fix security and energy issues. Even though people might disagree with PTI's security policies, one thing is for sure, they will do something about it compared to PMLN who don't even have a counter-terrorism plan (if they had one, they won't be making electoral alliances with ASWJ).
We have old faces with old results For old ones, no chance that I vote for them as I know the past. We have to take a chance with PTI who already issued great policies for the prosparity of Pakistan.
@ustaad, Ex CM punjab did great job, but he lacks in segregation of duties. lack of good governance in Punjab. He was not the CM of Lahore, he was the CM of whole punjab. Unfortunatly he belongs to PML(N) not PML(Shehbaz). Means he has to do what he is told to do by Nawaz. And Nawaz is a big liar. All his family is in the higher position of party and PML(n) members are record holders of fake degrees. Fake degrees does not mean that they are un-educated, it means they have already deceived the public of Pakistan. And if you vote for them you will be the biggest fool.
MQM would be a much batter choice than PTI. It is secular, middle class and have no alliance with Mullah
Vote for someone who you think has clean, honest intentions. That is the first (and most important) thing I see and hence, my vote's for PTI. I see nothing but honesty, and a will to do something for the common man, not for votes or power, but only because he suffers in the present day Pakistan.
It can only be better than where we stand today. Vote wisely :)
my support and vote for PTI to bring insaf and good goverence in Pakistan
lol..love ur cute reply naeem
Its a no-brainer! Vote for PTI and give Pakistanis a fresh new option!
This should help you decide.
