On Monday, a 13-year-old girl, B*, and her mother, H*, staged a protest outside the press club in Larkana. They claimed that B was at her father-in-law’s house in Abra village, within the jurisdiction of the Qamber police station, when had made advances on Monday evening. When she staunchly refused, he started beating her mercilessly and locked her in a room. B used her cell phone to inform her mother about what happened and asked her for help. H rushed to the house and was successful in setting her daughter free, but B’s father-in-law thrashed her as well and fractured her leg.
When B and H went to the Qamber police station, law enforcers refused to register an FIR, as a result of which both of them headed to Larkana to seek justice. Both women also went to Chandka Medical College Hospital.
“My daughter got engaged to my nephew, M, two years ago,” said H. “When M’s father coerced me to organise the wedding last year, I had no choice but to do so,” she said, adding that M is only 10 years old and her daughter is merely 13 years of age, which is why she was vehemently against them tying the knot. After the protest, the police took notice of the incident and arrested B’s father-in-law on Tuesday.
