Market security: Jewellers advised to hire private guards

Jewellers in the city have been advised by the police to improve security for their shops at their own expense, The Express Tribune has learnt.
Station house officers (SHOs) at all police stations in the district have been directed to collect information of jewellers’ shops in the district, including jewellers’ investment and the values of gold and other precious items kept at the shops.
Inspector Aamir Waheed, a spokesman for the Police Department, told The Express Tribune the information was being sought in view of the recent robberies at the jewellers’ market in Ghulam Muhammadabad.
He regretted that the police were accused of negligence and being slow to response. He said they were taking appropriate measures to control the situation and to arrest the robbers. He said a questionnaire had been issued to every SHO to list all jewellery shops in their areas. They were told to provide the information at the earliest.
“The information sought includes the name of the shop owner, location of the shop, names of workers and dealers and the amount of gold,” he said.
He said police had also advised each shop owner to deploy at least two security guards the shop. The jewellers had earlier demanded that the police provide security at the market.
Police Department has warned the shop owners that action would be taken against those who fail to comply with the directive. Inspector Waheed said police were also investigating earlier robberies at the market in Ghulam Muhammadabad. He said he could not reveal the progress the investigation had made but confirmed that no arrests had been made so far. He said he would hold a press conference in this regard next week.
