Olympian Khan Muhammad passes away

One of the pioneers of boxing in Pakistan Khan Muhammed passed away on March 18 at the age of 84 in London.
Khan was a Pakhtun by origin and resided in Lyari before moving to England after retiring from the game in 1953.
He gave trials for 1948 Olympics Pakistan boxing team but was not selected. However, his wish came true four years later when he participated in 1952 Olympics held in Helsinki, Finland.
In the 1952 Olympics, he competed in the middleweight (75kg) category and managed a 2-1 victory in the first round over Poland's Henryk Nowara. He crashed out of the Olympics in the very next round against Italy's Walter Sentimenti, who registered an easy 3-0 win.
He retired in 1953 and moved to England. He visited Pakistan occasionally but never entered the boxing circuit again, neither as a mentor nor as a coach.
Pakistan Boxing Federation secretary Akram Khan offered his condolences, "He had the honour of boxing in front of nation's father Muhammad Ali Jinnah and was one of the pioneers of the sport in Pakistan.”
