Political transitions: ‘The Makhdooms failed the people, that is why we are parting ways’
PPP’s Nizamani and Rahu warn that they will not be bullied.
HYDERABAD:
The Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) President Makhdoom Amin Fahim’s warning to former supporters to return to the party has been rejected. Two influential members of PPP, Ali Ahmed Nizamani and Nazir Rahu, announced during a press conference in Sundayin, Matiari, that they will not be bullied by the Makhdooms. “We are parting ways with the Makhdooms because they have failed to serve the people,” said Nizamani. “However, we love the Bhutto family and no one can separate us from the PPP.”
Fahim went on to allege that Nizamani and Rahu were instigating the residents of Matiari against the Makhdoom family. “They will be sacked from the party if they do not stop their activities by March 19,” he claimed.
Nizamani and Rahu, who lever considerable influence in two of the four talukas of Matiari, have joined a new alliance, Awami Ittehad, which will be opposing the Makhdoom family in the upcoming elections in Matiari. The alliance is led by Pakistan Muslim League-Fuctional’s Syed Muhammad Ali Shah Jamote and consists of a number of groups, including Memon Itehad and Khaskheli communities.
“We will fight the elections with Awami Ittehad,” Rahu mentioned during the conference. “The people of Matiari can choose who they stand with.”
The Makhdoom family, which has been winning seats in the national and provincial assembly from Matiari since the past nine general elections going back to 1970, also tried to bring the dissenters back to the party’s fold when President Asif Zardari visited Hala in December, 2012.
