Governor Makhdoom Syed Ahmad Mehmood said on Sunday that he had accepted governorship with the approval of Pir Pagara and would not compete for any seat in the general elections.
He was speaking at the oath-taking ceremony of the newly elected officials of the District Bar Association at Shaikh Zayed Public School on Sunday.
Mehmood said joining the Pakistan Peoples Party under the leadership of Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari was his sons’ own decisions. He said he could neither influence, nor stop them.

“I have told my sons not to expect any favours in general elections because they are my sons. Merit is the PPP’s first priority.”
He said that the outgoing parliament had made historic decisions in restoring the Constitution to its original form and completing a democratic tenure. He said powers previously held by the president and the governor had been restored to the parliament for the first time.
The governor said, “I had never desired to be the governor. I accepted it at the insistence of President Asif Ali Zardari.”
He praised the president for taking the huge and important step of signing the Iran-Pakistan Gas Pipeline Project. He said this agreement was historic and would help resolve Pakistan’s energy crisis.
He urged the people to elect those who had given them more than “just words”. He said they (people) must consider all tangible steps taken for the future of the country and the people before they voted.
The governor later administered oath to the newly elected bar officials. He also announced a Rs250,000 grant for the bar.
