RAWALPINDI:

Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif on Saturday inaugurated the Pirwadhai flyover and underpass, built at an estimated cost of Rs1.45 billion.

The project was completed in a period of less than five months, a month ahead of schedule.

Strict security arrangements were put in place and traffic was diverted on various routes before Sharif’s arrival.

A large number of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) supporters present at the site chanted slogans in favour of their party.

Sharif was flanked by Member National Assembly (MNA) Muhammad Hanif Abbasi, Punjab Law Minister Rana Sanaullah, MPA Abrar and other local leaders.

Speaking on the occasion, Sharif termed the successful completion of the project another achievement of his party while congratulating the National Logistics Cell (NLC), district government, traffic police and residents of the city.

He also praised the labourers for their hard work in helping to build the flyover and announced a cash reward of Rs1 million for their efforts.

Talking to The Express Tribune, an official from the NLC said that the construction of sidewalls at the flyover were yet to be completed but local PML-N leaders wanted the project inaugurated before the provincial government’s departure.

The official added that the construction work of the service roads would be completed soon.

The flyover will facilitate hundreds of thousands of commuters entering and leaving several localities of Rawalpindi and Islamabad daily.

The length of the two-lane underpass is 436 metres while the three-lane bridge is 380 metres long with the ramps ranging from 95 to 96 metres.

Apart from providing hassle free access, the flyover and underpass will reduce fuel consumption by 370 gallons per peak hour which is estimated to save costs by around Rs150,000 per peak hour or Rs219 million per year, said another official.

Shifting his focus, Sharif vowed that more Metro Bus projects would be launched across Pakistan if his party was voted into power.

“I promise to launch Metro Bus project in Karachi, Rawalpindi and Faisalabad if the people voted PML-N to power,” he vowed.

He said the PML-N believed in transparency and thus requested Transparency International (TI) to carry out audits for the Metro Bus and Laptop projects respectively.

“I am proud that TI could not prove the embezzlement of even a penny,” he said and added that the organisation had issued a certificate in this regard.
