Thousands sit UET entry test 2010
UET conducts standardised entry tests for 2010 admissions to undergraduate engineering programmes.
LAHORE:
The University of Engineering and Technology (UET) Lahore, on Sunday, conducted a standardised entry test for 2010 admissions to undergraduate engineering programmes. Ten test stations were set up for the purpose.
The test is also used for admission to honours programme in information technology and statistics majors.
The examination books of the candidates who took the test at other stations will be sent to Lahore, for evaluation. The official results will be uploaded on the university’s website on September 26. The answer key, however, was to become available at midnight, within hours of the test administration.
Some candidates, seeking admission after passing their Cambridge International Examinations complained that it favoured the candidates who had taken local board’s FSc examination.
Muhammad Usman, who passed his FSc from the Lahore Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education, told The Express Tribune that a portion of the physics examination comprised questions based on numerical values, which favoured cramming.
He said, “Candidates who are good at cramming values would have an edge. Most of the questions did not require thorough understanding of the concepts.” He said that he came from an institution that emphasised understanding and application of the concepts.
Some A-Level graduates said that the entry test had been based on the FSc syllabus. Sameera, a candidate with an A-Level certificate said, “The tests are along FSc pattern. That is why fewer A-Level students take the test.”
Tanveer Qasim, a UET spokesman said, “Every year a small group of students object on the entry test, but then there are others who do well and appreciate it.”
He, however, did not comment on why fewer A-Level candidates took the test.A total of 36,660 candidates were enrolled for the 2010 test. Out of these 14,181 candidates were to appear at the Lahore examination centre; 3,417 at Taxila centre; 6,097 at Multan centre; 1,729 at Bahawalpur centre; 3,077 at Faisalabad centre; 1,873 at Gujrat centre; 3,793 at Rawalpindi centre; 1,173 at Karachi centre; 1,117 at Peshawar centre; and 203 at Quetta centre.
