ISLAMABAD:
Enraged teachers from model schools and colleges stormed the Federal Directorate of Education on Friday over the alleged “favouritism and nepotism in regularising” 65 blue-eyed teachers.
Over 200 teachers, including females, entered the FDE building forcing the officials, including directors, and other staff members to flee the building. They described the decision injustice to the deserving teachers saying this biased decision has been taken by a few people in their own interests.
“I have been working as a teacher for the last three years and the list includes the names of those who were appointed just three months back,” lamented Rashid Mehmood, a teacher at Islamabad Model College for Boys, G-6/3.
The list includes the names of two sons of a principal at IMCB F-8/4 as lecturer and lab in-charge respectively in the same college in basic pay scale-12.
Mehmood told The Express Tribune that one of the principal’s sons has a full-time job at Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission and has not taught a class in over two years despite the fact that his name was not included in the previous list.
The reason in the remarks box for non-inclusion of his name in the previous list was given as “missing from the previous list as the same were not forwarded by the institution in time”.
The list prepared in February contains the names of many teachers, but only “special people” have been included in the final list.
Some of the daily-wagers have been regularised with back date. Some have never appeared in colleges.
“The Model Colleges’ director, Capital Administration and Development joint secretary and adviser to the CAD minister with some principals on March 12 finalised the names of their near and dear ones,” said a teacher on the condition of anonymity.
She alleged that one of the teachers, a relative of a federal minister, has been appointed in the federal setup instead of model colleges to avoid controversy because he was not teaching anywhere.
Interestingly, the teacher’s joining date and qualifications are also missing from the list.
“Many names included in the list are friends and relatives of FDE staffers, principals and vice-principals,” said Tanveer, another protesting teacher.
Later in the evening, when the teachers refused to leave the building, the police arrived at the scene and told them to vacate the building, but they refused. “We will not leave until a senior official comes and assures us of something concrete.”
Two days back, when the teachers first heard of the ‘illegal’ regularisation, they protested before CAD Secretary Rifat Shaheen Qazi, who assured them the “injustice” would be addressed.
Model Colleges’ Director Tariq Masood told The Express Tribune that the list has not been finalised yet.
Many teachers have been directly recruited by the colleges and they have to go through the verification process for degrees and all other related documents, he added.
