Land revival: WAPDA initiates Rs8.6b project

Annual benefits of the project had been estimated at Rs1.68 billion.

On Friday, Water and Power Development Authority (Wapda) initiated the Muzaffar Garh Canal Lining Project to control water logging in Muzaffar Garh district, Punjab. The project is scheduled to be completed in two years with an estimated cost of Rs8.66 billion.


Former prime minister Yousaf Raza Gilani and Foreign Minister Hina Rabbani Khar jointly performed the groundbreaking for the project. Wapda Chairman Syed Raghib Shah was also present.


Speaking on the occasion, the foreign minister said that the project will significantly contribute towards socioeconomic uplift by boosting agriculture and reducing poverty in the region. Annual benefits of the project had been estimated at Rs1.68 billion.

Earlier, the Wapda chairman briefed that the project was of immense importance for agriculture development in the country, as it will help reclaim about 400,000 acres of land for cultivation in Kot Addu and Muzaffar Garh.
