Fighting crime: Two robberies successfully foiled

The incident occurred when money was being transferred into the van after the bank had closed as per routine.

KARACHI:

Three security guards were killed and three other people, including 10-year-old Shamir and nine-year-old Rehan, were wounded when nine robbers on motorcycles attacked a van of Muslim Commercial Bank carrying cash in Orangi Town’s Aligarh Bazaar on Monday.

The incident occurred when money was being transferred into the van after the bank had closed as per routine. According to the police, a total of Rs8.9 million was being transferred at the time and the security guards saved most of the money from being robbed. The culprits escaped with Rs475,000 only, they added.

Police officials explained that the culprits had bombs concealed in some cricket balls they were carrying. “The incident occurred in a very crowded place,” said DSP Zahid Hussain. “The  culprits were able to escape under cover of the smoke that spread when they threw the bombs.”

The police suspect that members of banned terrorist organisations, including Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan and Lashkar-e-Jhangvi, may be involved. “The police is trying to make sketches of the culprits with the help of the witnesses,” DSP Hussain added. “However, nothing can be said till the investigation is finalised.” The deceased and injured were taken to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital.

In a separate incident at SITE, a police constable, Naseem, managed to save a branch of United Bank Limited from being robbed. Four men on two motorcycles attempted to rob the bank. The security guard closed the door of the bank from inside to prevent them from entering. Meanwhile, Naseem fired in the air making the culprits disperse. District West SSP Asif Ejaz Shaikh, announced that Rs15,000 will be given to the  police constable.
