LAHORE:

Four men beat up Young Doctors Association (YDA) Pakistan General Secretary Dr Salman Kazmi at Mayo Hospital on Monday.

Dr Kazmi received minor bruises and injuries and was given first aid at the emergency department. He said that one of the men identified him and he told the other three to attack him. Hospital staff nearby intervened and stopped them, catching one man while the other three fled. Dr Kazmi said that he had submitted an application for an FIR and he had nominated Additional Medical Superintendent (AMS) Tariq Ijaz, as he did not have any differences with anyone else. At the time this report was filed, an FIR had yet to be registered.

Dozens of Mayo Hospital doctors had staged a protest back in September 2012 after Ijaz had allegedly threatened and assaulted Dr Kazmi.

The arrested man, identified as Shakoor, told the police that he and the others had beaten up Dr Kazmi because he had asked his sister for her mobile phone number, a constable told The Express Tribune. However, he said that when he asked the man where his sister was, he couldn’t produce her. Mayo Hospital Medical Superintendent Dr Zahid Pervaiz, according to witnesses, also told the police that he did not believe that this was the reason for the attack, as Dr Kazmi had a very good reputation.

YDA Punjab and YDA Pakistan both condemned the incident and said they would announce a protest soon.
