Journalists protest, demand security
It is unfortunate that the state’s machinery has failed to protect media personnel, says Qais Jawad.
DERA ISMAIL KHAN:
A protest was held in the city against the killing of senior journalist Malik Mumtaz Khan in Miranshah, North Waziristan.
The rally was organised by Dera Photo Journalist Association, Markazi Anjuman-e-Tajiran DI Khan, Pak-Shaheen Auto-Rickshaw Union, Seraiki Qaumi Movement (SQM) and members of the DI Khan Press Club.
Participants held placards inscribed with slogans condemning the attack and demanded protection for media personnel in conflict zones. The procession moved through various baazars and later convened at Topan Wala Chowk.
Addressing the protesters, Dera Photo Journalist Association President Qais Jawad said journalists work to disseminate information to the public and uphold people’s rights, adding that this meant ensuring the protection of media personnel against such attacks was the state’s responsibility. “It is unfortunate that the state’s machinery has failed in this regard,” he added.
President Dera Ismail Khan Press Club, Muhammad Ramzan demanded the government take steps to ensure security provisions for journalists and arrest Malik Mumtaz’s killers as soon as possible.
