KARACHI:
A Pakistan Navy officer was critically injured after gunmen opened fire at his car near gate 15 of Karachi Port Trust (KPT) on Wednesday, Express News reported.

According to security sources, it was a targeted attack on Lieutenant Commander Azeem Haider, and all navy officers had been earlier informed of a possible attack.

Lt Haider got three bullet injuries to his chest and was shifted to PNS Shifa Hospital.

It was earlier reported that Lt Haider was investigating the PNS Mehran attack, but security sources denied the officer’s involvement in the investigation.

Targeted killings have been on the rise in Karachi at the same time when the Supreme Court is hearing a suo motu case on the law and order situation in the city.

Rangers have also been given additional powers to deal with the ongoing violence and to carry out security operations.

Correction: Express News had earlier misreported that Lt Haider has succumbed to his injuries. The error is regretted.
