Oath taking: Justice Hameedur Rehman sworn in as SC judge

After a prolonged confirmation process, Justice Iqbal Hameedur Rehman on Monday took oath as a judge of the Supreme Court (SC) of Pakistan. The oath taking ceremony, presided over by Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry, was held in the SC building and attended by a number of Islamabad High Court (IHC) and SC judges.



Rehman, a former chief justice of the IHC, was appointed as a SC judge by President Asif Ali Zardari through a notification issued on February 23. He started his professional career as an Advocate in 1981 from the District and Civil Courts in Lahore and was enrolled as an Advocate High Court in 1983 and an Advocate Supreme Court in 1997. In 1998, Justice Rehman was elected as the Secretary Lahore High Court (LHC) Bar Association. In 2006, he was elevated as an Additional Judge of the LHC and confirmed as a permanent Judge on October 27 2007.

Meanwhile, President Zardari administered the oath to Justice Muhammad Anwar Khan Kasi as chief justice of the IHC at President House.  The notification of Justice Kasi’s appointment was also issued on February 23 by the president on the advice of the prime minister following the recommendations of the judicial commission on judges’ appointment.
