A lecture on the ‘Election Commission of Pakistan and Elections 2013 - How to Report Elections for the Print and Electronic Media’ was organised by Shah Abdul Latif University’s (SALU) media studies department on Monday.

A senior journalist, Qazi Asif, spoke to the students about the history of the Election Commission of Pakistan. He also told them about the pitfalls of reporting on elections, before and after they have happened. “Media representatives must be impartial and must report on the basis of facts,” he explained. “They must collect authentic background information on the constituencies. Additionally, they must acquire data directly from the polling stations on the day of election.” Qazi stressed that the media can play a pivotal role in ensuring that the elections are free and fair.

A question and answer session was held after the lecture. The chairman of the department of media studies, Prof. Dr Taj Muhammad Lashari, also attended the session.
