ISLAMABAD:

The importance of extracurricular activities was on display on Friday, as over a 1,000 students from more than 20 educational institutions and 10 cities participated in a myriad of competitions at the Millennium Olympiad 2013 in Islamabad on Friday.

The Olympiad is a project of the students of Roots Millennium Schools (RMS), Millennium Campus. The two-day event, which is being held at the campus in Sector I-9/3, features 20 competitions.

On day one, students took part in live art, debating, dramatics, chess, computer gaming, table tennis, photo essay, fashion designing, filmmaking, singing, dancing and creative writing competitions.

“The Millennium Olympiad is the most happening event in Islamabad,” said one student participating in the Table Tennis competition.

Thirty-one students from different Roots schools in the twin cities achieved top honours in the recently announced results of the Cambridge International Examinations 2012. Flora Mehmood, headmistress and guidance counsellor of RMS, said the Olympiad shows that Roots students also engage in extracurricular activities.

“The students love every minute of the Olympiad,” Mehmood said.

Spanish Ambassador Javier Carbajosa and RMS Chief Executive Officer Chaudhry Faisal Mushtaq were the guests of honour at the Olympiad’s opening ceremony.

Carbajosa addressed the students on the occasion and encouraged them to become the agents of change through engagement in student initiatives on national and international forums.

Mushtaq said schools should provide an environment conducive to the personal and professional development of students as the leaders of tomorrow.

Student speakers at the ceremony asked their fellow participants to pursue the spirit entrepreneurial ideas as opposed to educational opportunities and careers abroad so they can contribute to Pakistan’s growth and development.

The opening ceremony was followed by an evening of entertainment and music, which included a formal dinner and a fashion show.

The Olympiad will continue on Saturday, with Bhangra band Sahara UK slated to perform a concert in the evening.
