QUETTA:
Media persons and members of civil society have expressed their deep concern over the security of journalists in Balochistan who, due to the lack of training, are putting their lives at stake to gather news.
“Journalists should not become breaking news in the run for breaking news,” journalist Shehzada Zulfiqar said at a workshop held to highlight the importance of responsible reporting in violence-hit areas.
He urged the owners of electronic and print media outlets to give priority to the security of their reporters covering affected areas.
Zulfiqar and the provincial coordinator of the NGO, Individualland Pakistan, Hashim Kakar conducted the workshop held with the support of the National Endowment Fund for Democracy (NEFD) at a hotel in Quetta.
The journalists of Balochistan should not be biased even when living in strife-stricken areas of the restive province, the speakers said.
Journalists from Quetta, Pishin, Qila Abdullah and Chaman attended the session.
Thirteen journalists lost their lives in 2012 and from 2000 till today 90 journalists have died performing their duties in Pakistan.
