Intra-party Polls: 29 file nominations for PTI elections

As many as 29 party workers from 36 districts, who have expressed confidence in Ejaz Chaudhry for provincial leadership, have filed nomination papers for the positions of district president and focal persons in the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf elections, The Express Tribune has learnt.


Requesting anonymity, senior party leaders said these candidates have expressed unconditional support for Ejaz Chaudhry’s bid for Punjab chapter presidency. Friday was the last day for nominations. Polls for electing district presidents will be held on February 26, they said. As many as 20 candidates have been nominated for presidency and nine as focal persons.

The last date for withdrawing nominations is February 16 and 17.

From the southern region seven candidates have pledged support for Chaudhry. They are Yasir Arafat from Layyah, Shahid Mustafa Qureshi from Muzaffargarh, Col (retd) Farooq Buzdar from Rajanpur, Mian Farzad Ali Goher from Bahawalpur and Chaudhry Shoukat Daud from Rahim Yar Khan. All these candidates are running for district presidency. Malik Iqbal Saqib and Chaudhry Moazam Ali are contending for the position of focal person in Dera Ghazi Khan and Bahawalnagar. Ijaz Hussain Janjua from Multan, Col (retd) Abid Shah Khagga from Khanewal and Chaudhry Tahir Anwar Wahla from Vehari have filed nomination papers for presidency. Saad Khurshid Khan Kanju is running for focal person in district Lodhran.




In the western region, candidates for the post of president are Hafeez Khan Baloch in Okara, Rana Ahmed Rahil in Fasialabad, Dr Abul Hassan in Jhang and Shaukat Ali Thame in Chiniot. Imran Ghazali will run for focal person in Sahiwal.

Candidates for presidency in the central region include Mian Mehmoodur Rasheed in Lahore, Nadeem Baran Khan in Kasur, Rana Naeemur Rehman in Gujranwala, Shahid Randawa in Nankana Sahib and Dr Muhammad Ashraf in Sheikhupura. Aleem Khan from the Unity Group will contest the election for Lahore’s presidency against Mehmoodur Rasheed.

In the northern region, Umer Myer filed his nomination for presidency in Sialkot, Falak Sher Ranjha in Mandi Bahauddin, Malik Mehmood Khan in Khushab, Usman Chohan in Jhelum, Sardar Mumtaz in Attock, Syed Shahid Gilani in Rawalpindi and Dr Salahud Din Abbasi filed his nomination for presidency in Mianwali.

Several candidates while talking to The Express Tribune expressed confidence in Ejaz Chaudhry and Dr Yasmeen Rashid’s leadership. They said the new leadership would promote a political culture where the voice of the layman would be heard and respected.

Chaudhry said, “We hope to come up to the expectations of those who will vote for our leadership.”
