ISLAMABAD:

Chief Election Commissioner Justice Fakhruddin G Ebrahim welcomed the Supreme Court’s decision on Dr Tahirul Qadri’s petition.

“The Supreme Court has expressed its full confidence in the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP). The commission was constituted in accordance with constitutional provisions,” said Ebrahim.

He added that both the SC and ECP were moving on the same track in their desire to have elections held on time.

The main opposition party Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) also commended the Supreme Court’s decision as “victory of democracy”.

“The SC decision is a major boost for those political parties which seek the continuity of democracy through free and fair polls under the ECP,” PML-N Senator Tariq Azeem said in a statement.

“Those calling for the reconstitution of the ECP want to derail democracy and pose hurdles to the smooth transition,” he added.

Senator Azeem also said that Qadri should renounce his dual nationality and contest elections if he truly wanted to bring change to the country.
