Saint Patrick’s Cathedral went purple on Wednesday evening to mark the beginning of the season of Lent.
Lent is a 40-day fasting period that started on Wednesday after a special morning mass. Similar to elsewhere in the world, the Roman Catholic churches will use the purple colour to mark the season of ‘spirituality’.
“In the religious calendar the colours have their own significance. During the Lent season, the purple colour remains visible in the dresses of the priests, etc,” said the catechist, Master Pervez Iqbal. The colour purple depicts spirituality, he explained.
Christians across the world are already observing year 2013 as the ‘Year of Faith’ and the Lent season is an important part of Christianity. For the next 40 days, special prayers will be offered. The Lent period will end on March 31 and will be marked by Easter Sunday.
