Medical Negligence: Three doctors dismissed, victim still in coma

A surgery was carried out at Nishtar Hospital Multan on 12 December 2009, during which Asif went into a coma.

The inquiry concluded that Dr Farrukh Aftab, Dr Jawad Alvi and Dr Khadim Hussain had been negligent in the treatment.

District and Sessions Judge Zafar Iqbal Chaudhry on Monday ordered the dismissal from service of three doctors from service over professional negligence.


The doctors were also ordered to pay Rs2 million each to the victim.

Police said Muhammad Asif, 32, had been diagnosed with appendicitis by Dr Khadim Hussain.

A surgery was carried out at Nishtar Hospital Multan on 12 December 2009, during which Asif went into a coma.

An inquiry ordered by Chief Justice of Pakistan Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry concluded that Dr Farrukh Aftab, a senior registrar, Dr Jawad Alvi, an anaesthetist and Dr Khadim Hussain, a post-graduate trainee had been negligent in the treatment.

Asif’s brother, Husnain Dall said he was satisfied with the court order. He said his family had been suffering all this time and were now thankful to the court.
