GILGIT: Relatives of a nine years old girl, Sahiba whose parents died in a recent landslide in Skardu, politely refused Chief Minster Mehdi Shah’s offer to adopt the child, explaining that she was the last remnant of their late son, sources said on Wednesday.
“If you allow me to look after Sahiba, I will be pleased to do that,” Mehdi Shah reportedly told the grandfather of the nine-year-old survivor, Sahiba, whose parents were among the 50 people who died in a landslide last month in the Kamrah village of Skardu.
Sources told The Express Tribune that the chief minister also assured the relatives of Sahiba that she would be provided with quality education if he was allowed to do that. “Sahiba is the last remnant of our beloved son, Sher Khan, and we would like to raise her ourselves,” the grandfather replied.
Mehdi Shah met the bereaved family during his Eid Milan visit to the victims of the floods that killed over 183 people in G-B in August. Sources said that being the only survivor of her family, Sahiba was offered financial assistance by many philanthropists in Skardu but her grandfather turned down all offers saying that he was rich enough to look after her.
