Absenteeism: Show cause notice full of erroneous information, claim lecturers
Many lecturers say their name has been included in the list despite the fact that they are not absent from work.
RAWALPINDI:
A show cause notice issued by the Punjab Higher Education Department (HED) in different newspapers warning to initiate disciplinary action against absent lecturers has perturbed many of them.
Some of the lecturers, whose names appeared in the show cause notice of February 7 approached The Express Tribune on Saturday claiming that they had not been absent from work for long without getting departmental permission.
“I have never been absent from my duties. But the higher education department has included my name in the list of absent college lecturers”, said a female lecturer requesting anonymity.
Another lecturer, teaching at the Gujar Khan College, lamented the erroneous list saying it was embarrassing for me and my family.
In the notice, the Punjab HED has warned the absent lecturers to either explain the cause of their absence within 15 days or face disciplinary action under the provisions of Punjab Employees Efficiency, Discipline and Accountability Act 2006.
The list named 291 male and 270 female college lecturers who had long been absent from duties from across Punjab including the Rawalpindi division.
Commenting on the notice, Prof Muhammad Ilyas Qureshi, President Punjab Professors and Lecturers Association (PPLA) Rawalpindi Chapter, said that it was a serious mistake on the part of the authorities concerned, causing worries for many lecturers.
He said that the PPLA would protest and take up the issue with the authorities concerned for not being cautious while issuing the list of the absent lecturers.
On the other hand, Director Colleges Rawalpindi, Humayun Iqbal, said that it was a routine practice of the higher education department to highlight the names of the absent lecturers through such notices.
Qureshi said that the notice had included the names of many such lecturers who were on deputation after getting due permission from the relevant authorities.
Responding to a question, the director colleges said that the authorities in Lahore directly collect the data of such lecturers (from their relevant colleges) and the regional directorates were not taken on board while collecting and issuing names of absent lecturers.
