USAID assistance will enable Pakistan to modernise policy formulation by improving research-based policy analysis, building capacity and leadership.

ISLAMABAD:

Dr Nadeemul Haq, deputy chairman of the Planning Commission, has said that institutional research for the solution of problems should be bottom to top, rather than from top to bottom. Explaining, he said: “Local institutions and academia should be involved in research on every sector, including the energy crisis, agriculture and poverty in the country.”

He was speaking at the “Second Research Competitive Grants Conference” organised by the Pakistan Strategy Support Program (PSSP) here on Friday. “The US Agency for International Development’s (USAID) assistance will enable Pakistan to modernise policy formulation by improving research-based policy analysis, building capacity and leadership, creating networks among researchers and analysts within and outside the government, and disseminating research results among diverse stakeholders,” he added.

“This will create a more favourable enabling environment for investments and enterprise growth,” Dr Haq added. The International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) implements the PSSP. It is a four-year USAID funded multi-dimensional, multi-partner initiative under the Pakistan Planning Commission’s Framework for Economic Growth.

The PSSP is supervised by a National Advisory Committee chaired by Dr Haq with other members including Abdul Wajid Rana, principal officer and secretary of finance.
