DI KHAN:

Elders of the Ahmadzai tribe held a jirga to discuss the security situation of a road that links Wana Subdivision of South Waziristan with Dera Ismail Khan through Tank District. Representatives of the Political Administration and religious clerics were also present on the occasion.

Following complaints of crime activities on the road, the political administration agreed to deploy security forces on the Gomal Zam Road.

Few days back, unidentified armed persons set alight six pickups and one car on the road near Zara Nai. They also looted the drivers and passengers belonging to the Ahmadzai tribe.

During the jirga, Assistant Political Agent Shahid Ali said the government will provide full security cover on the road. Elaborating the plan, he said traffic police will guard the road from Tanai to Gardow Wai and Frontier Constabulary and Khasadar forces will guard the area from Tanai to Wana Rustam Bazaar.

The Gomel Zam Road is important owing to its proximity to Tank via Jandolla to Wana Road. The Ahmadzai tribe is using the Gomel Zam Road for movement between Wana and Dera Ismail khan via Tank. However, with the influx of internally-displaced persons and militants, security concerns are raising in the area.

Malik Noor Ali, a tribal elder, said that Gomel Zam Road is only the road that Ahmadzai tribe of Wana sub-division of South Waziristan are using, and that security problems will affect their movement from Wana to the settled areas of Pakistan, adding that it is good that government assure the Ahmadzai tribe of taking security measures on Gomel Zam Road.

“We hope the government will act upon its claim of ensuring security to the Ahmadzai tribe who are using the road,” Noor Ali added.
