Shutters down: Transporters, traders join today’s strike call

Routine activities in the city are likely to come to a halt today, as political parties, transporters and the business community have decided to join the strike call given by some religious parties and seminaries, after the government failed to apprehend the culprits who shot dead Mufti Abdul Majeed Deenpuri of Jamia Uloom Islamia, Binoria Town in a targeted attack on January 31. All private schools in the city will also remain closed.



During a press conference on Wednesday, leaders of the Wafaqul Madaris alArabia, Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl and Ahle Sunnat Wal Jamaat gave the strike call.

The Jamaat-e-Islami, Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz, Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam and the Shia Ulema Council all confirmed that they would support the strike. All Karachi Tajir Ittehad also decided to heed the shutdown call. The group’s chairman, Atiq Mir, demanded that targeted killings of religious scholars of all sects come to an immediate stop. Irshad Bukhari of the Karachi Transport Ittehad, and Tariq Chaudhry of the Karachi Bus Owners Association, also announced that they would also the strike.

However, the Muttahida Qaumi Movement decided to not back the shutter down call. Meanwhile, the Awami National Party decided that it would stay neutral.
