Tax details necessary for candidates contesting elections: ECP
Ban on government hiring to continue despite objections.
ISLAMABAD:
The ECP has made it mandatory for candidates contesting the upcoming elections to submit their tax details while the ban on government hiring will continue, reported Express News.
Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Fakhruddin G Ebrahim held a meeting on Wednesday and a letter was presented by Federal Tax ombudsman secretary Dr Nazir Saeed.
Dr Nazir advised that it should be made mandatory that tax documents be submitted together with nomination papers.
It was also reported that Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) has submitted information regarding its party election to the ECP.
The government had earlier written formally to the CEC about its concern over the decision to freeze all government hiring. In the meeting held today, majority of the ECP members agreed on continuing with the ban on government hiring. Only one of the members from Sindh Assembly voted against it.
According to the federal tax minister, 70% of the parliamentarians did not pay tax in 2011; forcing ECP to take up the tax issue seriously.
The ECP will meet the representatives of opposition parties tomorrow.
