ISLAMABAD:

Enthusiastic about hosting yet another show, students clad in trendy clothes busied up to make sound checks and other arrangements. They were not prepping up for a concert but the fifth Model United Nations (MUNiC-V) that began at the City School Capital Campus on Thursday.

This year, around 550 students from City School campuses all over the country, are participating in the event, that has become something of tradition for them. “It took us students about four months to prepare for this week. We hope to outdo all of our previous MUNiCs,” said Alee Rafi, the school president who is supervising the arrangements.

Alongside the decor and music, witty punch lines on pink-coloured newsletters added to the cheery atmosphere.

Under a large tent, teams of delegates represented different countries. While some took the job of setting up their tables seriously, others seemed to having a good time grinning away as they sat with their empty tables. “We don’t have any material representing Portugal, I guess we ourselves are enough,” joked Abu Bakar, laughing with his teammates who had simply stuck a board saying “Welcome to Portugal” on their empty table.

However, a group of girls from Islamabad Model College for Girls F-7/2 were keenly decking up their stall to represent Italy. They served piping hot pasta and lasagna and even had a miniature of Leaning Tower of Pisa on the table. “Our food is the best in the world. We have everything from pasta, pizza, lasagne and deserts. Who doesn’t love Italy?” Mishaal, a student delegate, said. Garbed in a masquerade costume, a mask completed her look.

Moving on, the Chile table was not to be outdone with food as they set their table with a variety of traditional dishes. “We especially prepared all these dishes, even the apple Kuchen and the special Christmas drink Cola de Mono which is something like coffee but has egg yolk in it as well and of course green chilies as a pun,” stated Ruhma Shakeel.

Ambassadors from different countries were also invited to the event to experience the fun of global village; the tent also included a stage and ramp for students to parade their traditional costumes.

A tall and bejewelled Cleopatra stood gracefully representing Egypt in one corner. “I’m Cleopatra, I was known as the most beautiful woman in the world and worshipped as a goddess by my people,” announced the confident young girl.

Interestingly with all the countries in sight, tables for Pakistan and India seemed missing. “We have put our best foot forward. Let’s hope this week goes well” Mahnoor Zafar, in-charge of PR said.

Though many beautiful women have played the character of Cleopatra in the movies, general opinion is that she was not, Shakespeare is the only one who called her beautiful. . On the other hand, another lady from Egypt, Queen Nefertiti was supposed to be the most beautiful queen. Even today the modern fashion world holds her in high esteem.
