Lyari Expressway Project: SHC orders compensation to all affectees
Sindh High Court orders compensation funds for "all those, whose land was acquired for the project".
KARACHI:
The Sindh High Court has ordered the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) and Lyari Expressway Rehabilitation Project (LERP) officers to immediately pay compensation to “all those, whose land was acquired for the project, but compensation was not paid.”
After receiving complaints that officers are demanding bribes to issue compensation, the judges warned of stern action against anyone found involved in such practices. As many as 83 persons, whose lands had been acquired by the federal government for the Lyari Expressway, took the provincial chief secretary, KMC administrator, LERP project director and revenue department officials to the court.
They said the federal government had acquired their lands for Lyari Expressway after promising alternate land and monetary compensation. The petitioners alleged that they were running from pillar to post for many years as the authorities kept on promising to implement the agreement, but nothing had been done so far.
On Tuesday, additional advocate-general Shafi Muhammad Memon said the KMC and the provincial accountant-general had made arrangements to pay the compensation amount after due verification. “The process shall commence immediately,” he promised.
The bench, headed by Justice Maqbool Baqir, disposed of the applications, directing the relevant officials to start payments immediately.
