HONG KONG: Former Pakistan president Pervez Musharraf said on Wednesday he would launch a new party on October 1, as the retired general plots a return to the frontlines of the restive country’s turbulent politics.

Musharraf also accused Afghan President Hamid Karzai of lacking “legitimacy” but urged the West to stay the course against the Taliban and not to abandon the restive region.

“I’m going to a declare a party on October 1…. We have to bring about a new political culture in Pakistan,” he told reporters in Hong Kong after addressing an annual investors’ forum organised by the CLSA brokerage.

The 67-year-old Musharraf, who lives in self-imposed exile in London, shrugged off the threat of possible legal action arising from his years of military rule of Pakistan. “There are elements opposed to me, political elements, and they are the ones who engineer these cases. One has to face that. I’m very confident nothing can happen (on my eventual return home),” he said.

Musharraf, who plans to stand for parliament at the next general election in 2013, did not say where he would launch his new party but reports in Pakistan have said the October 1 event will take place in London.

In a BBC interview last week, Musharraf vowed to restore the battered country’s self-confidence and said he thought he could become president again.

As army chief, Musharraf ousted a civilian government in a bloodless coup in 1999. He was president from 2001 and has lived abroad since resigning in 2008. Pakistan is back under civilian rule and is currently facing catastrophic floods.

Zardari and Bhutto’s 21-year-old son Bilawal is being groomed for his own political career, but Musharraf said Pakistan had to turn a page on its dynastic politics. “I’m totally against this system where it becomes a family domain in all political parties. The essence of democracy is not there in Pakistan,” he said in Hong Kong.

After the September 11, 2001 attacks, Musharraf made Pakistan a key ally of then US president George W Bush in the “war on terror”, but faced a resurgence of militancy in the tribal areas near Afghanistan. He had a dismal relationship with Karzai, who regained power last year in an election that was widely decried as fraudulent. “There must be a legitimate government in Afghanistan…. He does not have that legitimacy,” Musharraf told the CLSA forum.

But with US President Barack Obama planning a troop drawdown from mid-2011, Musharraf warned that abandoning Afghanistan would “be playing into the hands of the Taliban and al Qaeda” and said “quitting is not an option”.

“The whole world is against the Taliban. So why can’t we win? We can win and will win. But we will suffer casualties…. No one is analysing the effect of abandoning the region on Afghanistan, Pakistan and the world.”

This will be the 73rd Political Party in the long list of Political Parties. As far as his following is concerned, he will be a threat to to his long time ally party MQM, because both share the Indian Immigrant back ground. He should not expect major support from Punjab, Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan. Sindhis will also no identify with him.
Its good. He should make a place in Urban Sind for himself. Another factor which can earn him some votes will be his inlaws factors who are “Qadiani” Recommend

@Asmat, think positive, dont bring that foolish immigrant theory, check out history and where all the struggle for this country began who sacrificed and suffered the most, It was the indian immigrants who made the foundations of every instituition in this country yes to be spoiled by the so called soil sons, be grateful for your identity and freedom, otherwise you still will be grazing your sheeps if you had any on the land of british. Indian migrants left their dear ones and wealth behind and the cause was greater then greed for money if you have come to karachi. Even ZiaulHaq was from an indian migrant family why nobody points that out.

General Musharraf should announce a real political party as no Lota Party will be acceptable to silent majority. If Musharraf will keep away from the people who frenquently jump from one political party to another it will be a total failure. Rather it will be better for him not to announce any political party on October 01, 2010 if he is going to invite Lotas to join his party. Recommend

Why should he come back! Were nine long years with absolute power not enough to walk the talk that he is giving today. He proved a weak Pakistani in every sense of the word. Chaudries, Sherpaos, waderas, feudals, neo-feudals Mulla mafias, corrupt, con-men, and all were blooming under his umbrella. What is he talking now and what better can you expect from him now when he doesn’t even have the strength of the boots and baton which he enjoyed then.. Let’s have pity on Pakistan and not waste time with nonsensical ideas. No need to discuss spent bullets or rotten leaders of today and yesterday. A revolutionary change of system which completely erases the stigma of names and brands from Pakistan’s polity is the only way if we ever want to come to life again..Recommend

In real sense, to make political party he will need political workers, and we all know the political workers are more currupt then their leaders, this is the reason why Musharraf could not gather good politics around himself even at the utmost power of his regime.. He could gather the beneficiaries of the governance.
Now again Mr. Musharraf consider himself as the necessity, and dreaming to regain presidency.

We people, direction-less mob again need another leader, who will be our doctrine of necessity again.Recommend

Musharraf chose wrong venue to launch his political party.

The retired general should launch his political from Pakistan. Why he is deviatiing from his e

    arlier stand, “Pakistan First”.

Being a “Very Sincere” friend of Mush I would advise he should rather launch his party by

addressing a press conference under he Historic Minar-e-Pakistan whrere Pakistan Resolution

was adopted in 1940 presented by Maulvi Fazalul Sher-e-Bengal..

If Sharif brothers do not allow him to address the said press conference in Lahore, he should

straightway visit Peshawar and address the same in Qissa Khawani Bazaar where thousands of

former terrorists and suicide bombers will not only attend the conference but also arrange

    its live-coverage through “Al-Jazeeera” TV.

God Bless Pakistan, Amen, Summa Amen.

It is good to see that educated Pakistani welcome him. I feel proud again, I will be able to quote my self as Pakistani again…! Ashame full to me too that i have stopped quoting my self as Pakistani on several blogs, but i cant bear the humiliation international community have for Pakistan.

But the problem is how much educated are there in Pakistan (by educated i mean enlightened)? Its just a mere minority and others are highly influenced by big families in their respected cities and areas i.e. portraying only PPP and PML N. I think this is the time to chip in. We have been hearing our parents say Politics is a bad place for some one like us. Do CA MBBS MBA and try to find jobs in other liberal countries. Stand up I request…. not for any specific party but for Pakistan. (if we cant walk on road, we can write for Pakistan, potraying the best picture of Pakistan)

One more thing is how to add here is that why is He coming back? not for corruption like this at least. he is coming back for Pakistan. Forget grievances only if they are created in your mind by propagandist, and if you really feel some thing wrong write… Write Pakistan Write….!

It is time for a change. The politics in Pakistan has been infested with only two parties that seem to dominate the scene and are constantly fighting it out to see who gets the country. With either party it seems that the country and the people lose out.
With Musharraf’s announcement we all hope to see a more pro active democracy with a majority of the population exercising their vote. That is the only way to making a real change and to finally turn things around for Pakistan.
If his past track record is some indication, Musharraf might be the one to do just that. It is also time that Mr. Musharraf should step up and refute all allegations against him by providing the public with irrefutable evidence whether it be Siachen, the CJ catastrophe or the NRO. The people will always respect a man who is straight with them.
What we would also like to see is a political debate with Nawaz Sharif, Asif Zardari and Musharraf. Let the people put the questions to them and see what they have to say. It’s time to make a change – as a nation and the way we approach politics. Recommend

Well if he is actually for Pakistan. I will stand by him provided he selects honest team and work for Pakistan, middle class needs to come into politics. If its again Chaudries and some more corrupt politicians I do not see a hope.

I want to work with any body for the betterment of Pakistan in any capacity provided the intentions are right.

Corruption is a first no no. The punishment to the proven guilty corrupt to be of extreme nature! probably capital punishment. Speedy justice is required.Recommend

Man, you have to comment on such a link. This is serious evolution forming economic transmission and political instability. Former parties should emerge focusing on core concepts and formulate. I read a comment in there and finally realised how bad we are when it comes to Unity and this being the 78th party in Pakistan shows the landlords are still the water suppliers. God can help Pakistan only by aid from the globe… but the rightouesness belongs to us Pakistanis to restore what we loss somehwere. I am just waiting for this century’s Gandhi to emerge-may he be the one… I dont mind.Recommend

I find it absurdly odd that our nation would welcome back the worst from of politicians with open arms, hand an election over to the memory of a lady who basically stole with aplomb ensuring her husband would continue to do so for ages on. But when a man who spurred financial growth, took hard decisions at a time when emotions were running high, progressed our nuclear research facilities at Kahuta much the alarm of western government is considering to come back, all of a sudden he should be considered the devil incarnate and be ostracized for his association with the army. Where would our nation be without them? Recommend

Musharraf’s support is digging deep. It appears from this discussion that the PMLN and PPPP supporters are heavily bankning on poor and illterate class for the next election whenever it comes. If PMLN or PPPP supporters believe that the poor and uneducated class are buying onion @100/kg, sugar@86/kg, tomato @100/kg ……. and yet they are going to vote for them then PMLN and PPPP are only fooling themselves. Look at the rate of suecides (15 persons/day), which is ever highest in Pakistan. Geo Musharraf and Pakistan Zindabad. Recommend

The Major opposition will come from Punjab, Imran Khan, Nawaz Sharif , Hamid Meer, and other like them dislike PM because he is Urdu Speaking. Why these people dislike Urdu Speaking? Because they are Not Feudal. They are educated and Urban. How can PM influence Punjab. May be like Butto, who made alliance with Feudal of Punjab. Otherwise it will be very difficult for him to win the MOB.
Our Nation at present is a mob, to change it in Nation we need to take action like Pundit Jawaharlal Nehru, who put Birla (2nd Top Family In India) in jail for Tax Evasion. From that day No one dare to evade tax in India. Recommend

Sub se Pehlay Pakistan!!! Pakistan First, Musharraf Sahab I always had alot of respect towards yo, among all the corrupts I found some one atleast better if not perfect…

I still support you and I hope you have learned frm your mistakes what got you down was
Lal Masjid, Missing people Dr Afia the Judiciary case of Iftikhar sahab and Shokat Aziz’s wrong policy and ofcourse not banking on war on terror and not giving the Americans a tough time by supporting them giving them logistic support with out any condition in favor of Pakistan and
then there was the Baluchistan and Kashmir issue on which your policies were not clear…

I wish to see the same Musharraf who first came on tv and addressed the nation who had a seven point agenda in favor of Pakistan who was a brave Kargil Hero a soldier at heart not a corrupt and scared politician.

If you are truly a Pakistani who is a patriot and wants to build Pakistan and have love respect and support for the Muslim Ummah for every one in Pakistan including Kashmiris,
If you can really answer to your clear concious infront of Allah Almighty and do what Harzrat Omer (R.A) did we welcome you support you…

But please dont ruin the nation by bringing secularism into our state, follow Mustafa Kamal if you want to , do it he was a great man but above all is the rule of Lord Almighty, Dont twist religious values there is no moderate Islam because Islam is the most moderate religion it spreads peace for all be it Muslims or non muslims, We are one in Pakistan and will always be Ameen.Recommend

Pakistan under Musharraf managed a growth rate of over 7% Karachi stock exchange was
one of the best performing S/E . Foreign exchange reserves were about $16 billion ,
and those reserves were not aid and loan from foreign countries. Pakistan was able
to raise money at favourable rates on international money market . Pakistan’s credit rating
was improving all the time . And most importantly immage of pakistan was improving in
the world comunity. Ignorant Pakistani don’t understand economics and it’s importance .
