KARACHI:

A bomb went off accidentally when suspected militants were shifting it in the Sohrab Goth neighbourhood of Karachi Wednesday night.

At least three suspected militants were killed in the explosion that took place near an unoccupied building at a stone’s throw from Al-Asif Square.

According to reports, a taxi, rigged with 300 kilogrammes of explosives, was found parked near the blast site. Police said suspected militants might have been preparing the taxi to attack some target in the city. In the process one of the bombs might have exploded accidentally, police added.

Police blamed the outlawed Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan for the blast, saying the three persons killed were suspected militants.

Parts of Sohrab Goth are dominated by a local group of the TTP, according to the police. Two Rangers personnel and a police constable have been killed in recent attacks in the area and the police believe the same group was behind Wednesday’s attack.

The blast was the latest in a series of seven explosions that took place in different neighbourhoods of the city on Wednesday. At least six people – including a policeman – were wounded in grenade and cracker attacks in Federal B, Keamari and Lyari earlier in the day.
