ISLAMABAD:

A trial court on Monday acquitted Lal Masjid (Red Mosque) chief cleric  Maulana Abdul Aziz and three others in a case for kidnapping police constables in 2007.

Islamabad West Senior Civil Judge Sheikh Mohammad Sohail acquitted Maulana Aziz, Umme Hassan, Maulana Afzal and Maulana Abdul Basir for insufficient evidence.

Before the Lal Masjid operation in 2007, Aabpara Police had registered a case against Aziz and his four associates for kidnapping of four police officials.

The FIR against Aziz and others was registered under sections 365, 353, 148, 149 and 109, for kidnapping and obstructing government officials from performing their duty.

The prosecution had maintained that Aziz and his associates had snatched a police vehicle and kidnapped police constables before the Lal Masjid operation in 2007. However a trial in its order observed that prosecution has failed to provide any proof implicating them.
