FAISALABAD:

A Water and Sanitation Agency (Wasa) sub engineer died on Monday when he got buried under loose earth at a digging site. The authorities have announced Rs400,000 compensation for the heirs of the deceased.

Wasa Managing Director Syed Zahid Aziz told The Express Tribune that Sub Engineer Mushtaq Ahmad was supervising excavation at a site on Satiana Road near the Fish Farm, when loose earth fell on him burying him underneath.

Wasa workers said he had stepped into the ditch to inspect it shortly after it was dug by workers who were then digging another hole nearby. They said the mud from the ditch was still lying next to it.

Muhammad Akram, one of the workers, said they noticed after a while that some of the earth from the digging had fallen back into ditch. He said Rescue 1122 were called and the mud removed. By the time Ahmad was pulled out, he was dead.

The managing director said that the deceased was an honest officer and a committed worker. He said the heirs will soon be presented a cheque for the compensation money.
