Measles vaccination: 20,000 vials available with Health Dept

Dozens of children affected by measles in rural Punjab are under treatment at hospitals.

The district administration has arranged 20,000 vials of vaccine to stop the spread of the measles virus in the district. Measles cases have been reported from Nowshera Sansi, Mian Sansi, Nowshera Road, Girjakh, Dahlai, Francisabad, Sialkot Road, Chhachhar Wali and Sui Gas Road.


Dozens of children affected by measles in these areas are under treatment at hospitals. The Health Department has formed teams at the union council level to vaccinate children.

Talking to The Express Tribune, Health Executive District Officer Dr Azhar Masood Bhatti said that 143 cases of measles have been reported in the district. He said 9,000 children have been vaccinated.

He said the measles cases were being reported from certain areas, not from everywhere in the district.

He said some parents had tried to treat children suffering from measles on their own. He said some of the children reported to have died of measles were actually suffering from pneumonia and other diseases.

He said Health Department teams had been supplied the vaccine to vaccinate children in a door-to-door campaign.
