Officials from the health department confirmed on Tuesday that 100 children in Karachi have caught measles. “We called in an urgent meeting after the tests were confirmed,” said Executive District Officer Health Dr Imdadullah Siddiqui. “The meeting will review the situation and draw up a strategy.”

According to the World Health Organisation, more than 250 people in Sindh have died of measles. The government claims that 2.9 million children have been vaccinated against the disease in a crash programme that covered the eight, worst-hit districts of the province, including  Sukkur, Ghotki and Khairpur.

An anti-measles booster will also be administered by the health department towards the end of January.
