Building peace, one brick at a time
Five-day training workshop for peace-building held.
ISLAMABAD:
In the spirit of promoting peace, the PAIMAN Alumni Trust in collaboration with the European Union (EU) arranged a five-day training workshop to sensitise the youth of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) and Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA).
The training is part of a project titled “Waging Peace: Piece by Piece”, which is being carried out with EU support in Islamabad. It is aimed at building the capacity of communities including the youth to contribute for peace in K-P and FATA, said an official.
Students, women and young professionals travelled from Peshawar and FATA to participate in the workshop. The main emphasis was to provide participants with an insight into conflict transformation and peace-building techniques so that they could engage in mainstream decision-making processes to find effective solutions to disputes at the grassroots levels.
Trainers Nusrat Hashmi, Abdul Shakoor and Mussarat Qadeem carried out sessions consisting of PowerPoint presentations and discussions.
The participants were encouraged to make pictorial depictions of their perceptions of peace. By the end of the training sessions, the participants were made to vow to make an effort for bringing change in their own communities.
Addressing the participants, Mossarat Qadeem, the executive director of PAIMAN, said, “The youth of K-P and FATA are at the forefront of a courageous struggle to restore democracy and progress in their homeland,” and went on to add, “The local youth has tremendous potential for effective leadership and social transformation, which needs to be harnessed by women and policymakers to build sustainable peace in the region.”
