KARACHI:
A judicial magistrate on Monday sent two policemen, who were arrested for allegedly torturing a suspect to death inside Manghopir police station, on a remand.

Azizullah Khoso, judicial magistrate in district West, remanded ASI Muhammad Anwar and Constable Pervaiz Ahmed to custody till January 23. The officials were arrested on Monday, after friends and family of the victim, Khalid Ashiq, protested outside the Manghopir police station. District West DIG Javed Odho had suspended Manghopir SHO Nasir Mehmood, and directed officials to arrest the accused policemen, including constable Javed Qureshi, who managed to flee.

An FIR No. 14/13 was registered against the policemen under sections 302, 342 and 34 of the Pakistan Penal Code.

The police had arrested 20-year-old Ashiq and an accomplice late on Saturday from Nusrat Bhutto Colony for an alleged robbery.

A judicial magistrate, tasked with preparing the medico-legal report, confirmed the presence of several torture marks on Ashiq’s body. The report revealed that Ashiq’s jaw was broken, blood oozed out from a hole in his cheek and mouth, and that there were several torture marks on his legs and arms. The judicial magistrate submitted his report to the judge.
