A family seeking recovery of their ‘daughter-in-law’ from the alleged detention at her parents’ house went into hiding after the documents produced in support of their claims were found out to be bogus, police said.
Police said Allah Nawaz had submitted a nikahnama and their son’s picture with a fake moustache.
When police visited his home, they said, it was locked. They later found out that the family had fled the city.
Police said Mazhar Abbas, 25, a resident of Kehror Lal Isan in Layyah, had married Nasreen Bibi, 22, three years ago.
They said, Nasreen’s father, Allah Nawaz, had wanted Abbas’s younger sister Kulsoom, then 9, to be wed to his 10-year-old son Muhammad Imran in exchange.
Abbas’s father Muhammad Waryam said he had turned down the proposal. He, however, said he later settled on an agreement that the children would be married once they reached marriageable age.
A few months ago, police said, Nawaz called Nasreen to his home and detained her her. He told her father-in-law that she would be only allowed to return after Kulsoom was married to Imran.
Waryam said a panchayat, headed by Ghulam Yaseen, was convened in November and ruled in favour of Kulsoom’s father, but directed him to pay Nawaz Rs300,000 in case he later decided against the match.
Nasreen was them allowed back to her home.
On January 14, Nawaz filed a petition in Judge Khalid Khan’s court alleging Waryam was forcibly keeping Kulsoom at his house. He also presented a nikahnama showing that Imran and Kulsoom had been married a few weeks ago.
The judge had ordered the police to investigate the case and had summoned both parties to the court on February 14.
During the investigation, police said, they found out that Nawaz had put a fake moustache on Imran’s face to make him look like an adult. They also discovered that the nikahnama was forged.
Police have filed a fraud case against Allah Nawaz on the complaint of Muhammad Waryam.
