Much changed for better last year, more still to come: GOC

Thousands of tourists visit Swat valley in 2012 to enjoy the recreational facilities at Malam Jabba and Kalam in a peaceful environment. This was stated by General Officer Commanding Major General Ghulam Qamar.


Khan underscored the fact that the security forces have repulsed numerous cross border attacks from Afghanistan. “Terrorists will never be allowed to disturb the peace of Swat at any cost,” he said.

About socio-economic projects in the region, he said Swat snow festival, sports gala, T20 cricket tournament, Kalam festival, Government Higher Secondary School Kabal, widening of Kabal Road, renovation of Saidu Sharif Airport, keeping Lowari Tunnel and Kalam Road open during snow and renovation of number of schools were undertaken last year. Together, these steps have brought “a monumental change” to the area.




Responding to a question on re-integration of individuals in the society, he said that over 1,000 people have been re-integrated through a deradicalisation programme. “They are now useful member of the society,” he said.

About apprehension of suspects, he said that the number of attempts by terrorists to regroup have been thwarted successfully with the help of public and law-enforcement agencies.

The army, he added, plans to continue doing its work in 2013. He explained that a number of socioeconomic activities have been planned for 2013. These include the Malakand football tournament, Dir Snow Festival, Malam Jabba Snow Festival, Dir Cultural Week, a golf gala, Swat Youth Festival, a sports gala, Kalam festival, Shin Swat campaign, Chitral cultural week and youth symposium.
